Dr. Anton Schittek has been in Mt. Vernon for the past ten years with affiliation at Good Samaritan and
Crossroads Hospitals. Dr. Schittek is a board certified and twice re-certified surgeon with a broad and
extensive training. A graduate of Eberhard-Karl's
University in Tuebingen (Germany), Dr. Schittek came to the U.S. in 1970. He did a rotating internship
at Englewood Hospital in Englewood, NJ. Residencies included Pathology at Yale
University and General Surgery at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York (1970-77). Following
residency, Dr.Schittek completed a fellowship in Cancer Surgery at OSU
(Columbus, Ohio, 1981-83) and in Cardiovascular Surgery (Texas
Heart Institute, Houston Texas, 1988-90). During the Surgical Oncology fellowship, he was exposed to the
surgical and multidisciplinary treatments of the primary and recurrent cancers of the head and neck, melanoma,
breast, GI tract, liver and pancreas. The OSU program in Surgical Oncology is one of the few such programs in the U.S., in line with M.D. Anderson in Houston, Sloan-Kettering in New York, and Roswell-Park in Buffalo, and gives fully trained general surgeons an additional training in cancer therapy.
The fellowship in Cardiovascular Surgery at Texas Heart Institute, under Dr. Denton Cooley, has given Dr. Schittek the unique experience in one of the best cardiovascular clinics there is, with high volume of cardiac and peripheral vascular operations. During that time, he also was involved in research and presented the results at the lst International Symposium on Neurotrauma in Japan (May, 1991). The full paper relating to this research was published - with Dr. Denton Cooley as one of the co-authors - in 1992. Dr. Schittek has published numerous other papers on a variety of subjects, reaching from wound healing and cancer prevention using Vitamin A and Beta Carotene, to prevention of nerve damage during cardiovascular procedures.
Dr. Schittek's special interests now lie in the surgical management of peripheral vascular diseases, such as aortic aneurysm, carotid stenosis, bypass of lower extremity arterial disease and balloon angioplasty and stenting. He participates in continued medical education. For example, he learned advanced endovascular techniques at Arizona Heart Institute.
Dr. Schittek is Fellow of American College of Surgeons, Member of German Surgical Society, Society of American Gastroenterologic Surgeons, Fellow of International College of Angiology, and Member of American Association of Academic Surgeons.
